Virtual Self-Defense Class for Women

Learn self-defense techniques to protect yourself and raise your fitness to the next level.

One in three women have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. These numbers are shocking, and incidents of women being the target of gender-based violence and hate crimes continue to climb. BIPOC women are disproportionately affected by violence, and recently we have seen a rise in Asian women facing harassment. Fearing retaliation or victim-shaming, many women stay silent and refrain from going out or doing activities they used to enjoy. We need a societal and cultural shift that stops putting the blame on victims and holds perpetrators accountable.

Fuel Life believes all women deserve the right to feel safe within their own communities. Our goal is to empower individuals who identify as women through self-defense training. We will be hosting our first virtual self-defense class on Saturday April 17, 2021 from 10:00-11:00 am. Delivered via Zoom, this one-hour session will be led by Rick Pollon, a 4th Degree Black Belt Judo instructor. Rick will be demonstrating simple self-defense moves that can be effectively used during an attack. Personal trainer Mikkie Nettles will assist Rick in re-enacting real-life scenarios. We recommend participating in this session with a partner so that you are able to practice the new skills you learned right away!

The cost for the session is $20 per household. Fuel Life will be donating 50% of the proceeds from the self-defense class to Ending Violence Association of British Columbia (EVABC). EVABC is a charity that works with over 300 community-based services and initiatives, supporting survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence, child abuse, and criminal harassment. Together, we can help end violence against women in our communities.

The stress from the pandemic lockdown has significantly increased violence against women. By participating in this session, you'll acquire skills to empower yourself and pass along valuable self-defense knowledge to women in your life.

Rick Pollon

Rick Pollon started out boxing when he was living with his mom in Prince George at the women’s shelter and continued to box for 7 years.  Later in life he started Judo as a way to stay healthy and look for ways to improve personal safety.  Rick is currently a 4th degree Black Belt in Judo and has been actively doing Judo for 22 years including competing nationally in Kodokan Goshin jistu (Self defense against holds, striking, kicking with weapons and without).  Rick has worked with many organizations whose demographics included people who are vulnerable and at risk of physical harm.  With 4 years of bouncing experience as well as competing in Judo and Boxing, Rick is very experienced in how to protect oneself and others with a real-world approach of self defense.

Mikkie Nettles

Mikkie is a Certified Personal Trainer, a certified Holistic Nutritionist and an orange belt in Judo.  She is a mother of 4, and knows the importance of raising her children to be loving, confident and strong individuals in mind and body.   With different experiences throughout her own life and with others, she found a calling to help people develop their own self-confidence and awareness through personal training and nutrition.
