Heart disease, or cardiovascular disease, is the second leading cause of death in Canada.1 CVD refers to a spectrum of disorders including hypertension, stroke, atherosclerosis, and peripheral artery disease. Co-morbidities include obesity, dyslipidemia, and diabetes. The commonality between these conditions is inflammation. Smoking, unhealthy eating habits, alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity all increase CVD risk. As nutrition is one of the most preventative factors, modifying dietary intake could prevent or reverse heart disease.
